Death of Giuseppe Garibaldi

2 June 1882

Giuseppe Garibaldi died on 2 June 1882 in Caprera, aged 74. An Italian general and patriot born in Nice, Garibaldi was a sailor who took part in republican uprisings and spent years in exile in South America, where he fought in Brazil and Uruguay and perfected guerrilla tactics. He returned to Italy to defend the short-lived Roman Republic in 1849. In 1860 he led the volunteer force known as the Thousand, the Red Shirts, in the conquest of Sicily and southern Italy from the Bourbon kingdom, then handed the territories over to Victor Emmanuel II, which made possible the unification of Italy under the House of Savoy. He later made unsuccessful attempts to seize Rome. Celebrated as the Hero of Two Worlds, he spent his last years on the island of Caprera.
