Founding of Bank of France

18 January 1800

The Banque de France was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte soon after he took power as First Consul, to stabilise public finances and the currency after the turmoil of the Revolution and the collapse of the paper assignats. It began as a private bank run by prominent financiers, and in 1803 it was granted the exclusive right to issue banknotes in Paris, which was later extended to the whole of France. The bank was nationalised in 1945. Since the introduction of the euro, it has been part of the Eurosystem, and it takes part in the decisions of the European Central Bank while continuing to supervise French banks. It is housed in the Hotel de Toulouse in Paris.
