Athletic Club is a football club from Bilbao in the Basque Country of Spain, founded in the late nineteenth century by local young men who had often learned the game while studying in Britain. It is known for a policy of fielding mainly players who were born or trained in the Basque region, a tradition that has made it unusual among major clubs. Together with Real Madrid and Barcelona, it has never been relegated from Spain's top division since La Liga began in 1929. The club has won La Liga eight times and the Copa del Rey many times, with its greatest success coming in the 1930s and 1940s and again in the 1980s. It plays at San Mames, one of Spain's best-known grounds.
