Erich Maria Remarque was born on 22 June 1898 in Osnabrück. A German-born novelist, Remarque served in the German army in the First World War and drew on his experience for All Quiet on the Western Front, a stark portrayal of the war from the viewpoint of young soldiers. The novel was a worldwide best-seller, was made into a film, and was banned and burned by the Nazis, who stripped him of his citizenship. He left Germany for Switzerland and then the United States, where he wrote The Road Back, Three Comrades and Arch of Triumph, mostly about exile and war. He was married for a time to the actress Paulette Goddard.
