Construction of Principality of Sealand

2 September 1967

The Principality of Sealand is a self-declared micronation on Roughs Tower, a former British anti-aircraft fort built in the Second World War in the North Sea, about ten kilometres off the coast of Suffolk. The retired British army officer Paddy Roy Bates occupied the abandoned platform, first for a pirate radio station and then as a claimed independent state, with himself as prince. In 1968 a British court held that it had no jurisdiction because the fort stood outside the then three-mile territorial limit, which Bates took as support for his claim. Britain extended its territorial waters to twelve miles in 1987. Sealand is not recognised by any country, though it has issued stamps and coins.
