Founding of AFC Bournemouth

1899

AFC Bournemouth is an English football club from the seaside town of Bournemouth, in Dorset. It was formed in the late nineteenth century as a boys' club, and went through several name changes before becoming AFC Bournemouth in 1971. Nicknamed the Cherries, it played mostly in the lower divisions, and in 2008 it came close to going out of business. Led by the young manager Eddie Howe, the club made a remarkable recovery, rising through the leagues to reach the Premier League for the first time in 2015. It was relegated in 2020, and returned in 2022. The club plays in the small Vitality Stadium at Dean Court, one of the smallest grounds in the top flight.
