The Philippine-American War was an armed conflict between the United States and the First Philippine Republic, led by Emilio Aguinaldo. It followed the Spanish-American War, when Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States under the Treaty of Paris, even though Filipino revolutionaries had already declared independence. Fighting began near Manila in early 1899 and soon turned from conventional battles to a guerrilla war, which brought harsh measures from American forces. Aguinaldo was captured in 1901, and the war was declared over in 1902, although resistance continued in some regions, notably among the Moro people. Hundreds of thousands of Filipino civilians died from violence, disease and famine.
