The First Indochina War was fought in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia between France and the Viet Minh, the communist-led independence movement headed by Ho Chi Minh. It followed Japan's wartime occupation and the Viet Minh's declaration of independence, and escalated after negotiations with France broke down and fighting erupted in Hanoi and Haiphong. The Viet Minh waged a guerrilla war that grew into a conventional campaign, helped after 1949 by the new communist government in China, while France received increasing financial support from the United States. The French defeat at Dien Bien Phu led to the Geneva Accords, which divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel and ended French rule in Indochina, setting the stage for the Vietnam War.
