Elfriede Jelinek was born on 20 October 1946 in Mürzzuschlag. An Austrian novelist and playwright, Jelinek is known for provocative, linguistically inventive works that criticize sexism, consumer society and the lingering effects of Austria's Nazi past. Her novels include The Piano Teacher, which was adapted into a film by Michael Haneke, and Lust and Greed, and her plays often lack conventional characters and plot. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004 for her musical flow of voices and counter-voices in novels and plays. She did not travel to Stockholm to accept the prize in person, citing social anxiety, and remains a controversial figure in her country.
