The Balkans theatre of the First World War was the part of the conflict fought in south-eastern Europe, which started with Austria-Hungary's attack on Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. It included Serbia's campaigns in 1914 and 1915, the conquest of Serbia by the Central Powers, the Romanian campaign of 1916 and the long stalemate on the Macedonian front. Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire and Greece were also drawn in. The theatre ended with the Allied breakthrough of September 1918, which forced Bulgaria to ask for an armistice and opened the way to the collapse of the Central Powers in the region.
