Establishment of Berchtesgaden National Park

1 August 1978

Berchtesgaden National Park is in the Bavarian Alps on the border with Austria, and it covers a mountain landscape that includes the Königssee, the Watzmann massif and wide forests and high meadows. It was established in 1978 on the site of older protected areas, and it is the only alpine national park in Germany. The park is managed so that nature develops with little human intervention in much of its area, while there are traditional uses in a buffer zone. It is home to chamois, ibex, golden eagles and alpine marmots. Part of it has also been recognised as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
