Establishment of Arches National Park

12 November 1971

Arches National Park lies in eastern Utah near the town of Moab and contains more than two thousand natural sandstone arches, including Delicate Arch, which has become a symbol of the state. The area was protected as a national monument before it was made a national park. The arches were formed by the erosion of sandstone fins of the Entrada Formation, which lie over a deep layer of salt that has shifted and dissolved over time. The park also has balanced rocks, spires and fins. The writer Edward Abbey worked there as a ranger and described the desert in his book Desert Solitaire. Because of its popularity, the park has had to introduce timed entry at busy times.
