The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 was fought between India and Pakistan and led to the creation of Bangladesh. It came after months of crisis in East Pakistan, where a military crackdown after an election won by the Bengali Awami League caused millions of refugees to flee to India. The war began when Pakistan launched air strikes on Indian airfields, and India responded with an offensive on both fronts. Indian forces and Bengali guerrillas advanced rapidly in the east and Pakistani forces surrendered in Dhaka after less than two weeks of fighting. Tens of thousands of Pakistani soldiers became prisoners of war. Bangladesh became an independent state, and the Simla Agreement later governed relations between India and Pakistan.
