The Edwardian era is the period of British history that corresponds to the reign of King Edward VII, who came to the throne on the death of Queen Victoria. It is often remembered as a golden afternoon of garden parties, country houses and elegant fashion for the wealthy, but it was also a time of change and tension. The Liberal government elected in 1906 introduced welfare reforms, including old-age pensions, and conflict with the House of Lords led to a constitutional crisis. The suffragettes campaigned for votes for women, labour unions grew, and Britain competed with Germany in a naval arms race that included the launch of HMS Dreadnought. New technology such as the motor car and the telephone changed everyday life.
