Victoria died on 22 January 1901 in Osborne House, aged 81. Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Victoria came to the throne at eighteen in 1837 and reigned for more than sixty-three years, the longest of any British monarch until Elizabeth II. In 1840 she married her cousin Prince Albert, and they had nine children, who married into the royal families of Europe. After Albert's death in 1861, she withdrew from public life for years. She became Empress of India in 1876, and her Golden and Diamond Jubilees celebrated a period of industrial growth and imperial expansion. The age that bears her name saw major social and technological change.
