Giuseppe Verdi died on 27 January 1901 in Milan, aged 87. An Italian composer of opera, Verdi was born in a village near Busseto and rose to fame with Nabucco in 1842, whose chorus of Hebrew slaves was taken up by Italians longing for national unity. His mature works include Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata, followed by Aida, Otello and Falstaff in his old age. His operas are noted for their melody, dramatic power and human characters. During the Risorgimento his name became a rallying cry for Italian unification, and he served briefly as a member of parliament. He left his fortune to a rest home for retired musicians in Milan.
