Easter Rising

from 24 April 1916 to 30 April 1916

The Easter Rising was an armed rebellion against British rule in Ireland, launched in Dublin on Easter Monday in the middle of the First World War. It was organized by the Irish Republican Brotherhood together with the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army, and rebels seized buildings such as the General Post Office, where Patrick Pearse read a proclamation of an Irish Republic. British troops crushed the rising after about a week of fighting that damaged much of central Dublin and killed many civilians. The execution of fifteen of its leaders in May turned public opinion toward the rebels. This helped Sinn Féin win the 1918 election and led to the Irish War of Independence.
