Francis Crick was born on 8 June 1916 in Northampton. A British molecular biologist and neuroscientist, Crick was the co-discoverer, with James Watson, of the double helix structure of DNA in 1953, work done at Cambridge and based on X-ray diffraction images by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. The three men shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962. He helped to work out the genetic code, proposed the adaptor hypothesis for transfer RNA and formulated the central dogma of molecular biology. Later he moved to the Salk Institute in California and turned to the study of the brain and consciousness. He originally trained as a physicist.
