Discovery of S/2004 S 7

12 December 2004

S/2004 S 7 is the provisional designation of a small natural satellite of Saturn. The code means that it was the seventh new moon of Saturn reported in 2004, and designations of this kind are used until an official name is assigned by the International Astronomical Union. Saturn has a very large number of small moons, many of them discovered since the early 2000s with large telescopes and with the Cassini spacecraft. Such bodies are usually only a few kilometres across and little is known beyond their orbits and brightness.
