Discovery of S/2003 J 19

6 February 2003

S/2003 J 19 is a small irregular moon of Jupiter, found in 2003 during a survey of the outer regions of the planet's system by astronomers using large ground-based telescopes. Such moons are only a few kilometers across, and they follow distant, tilted orbits that suggest they were captured by Jupiter long ago. It carries a provisional designation, which records the year of discovery and its place in the numbered list of new Jupiter moons from that year.
