Deir Yassin massacre

9 April 1948

The Deir Yassin massacre took place in a village on the western outskirts of Jerusalem, during the civil war in Mandatory Palestine that preceded the creation of Israel. Fighters of the Irgun and Lehi, two Jewish paramilitary groups, attacked the village with the knowledge of the main Jewish force, the Haganah, and in the fighting and after it, many villagers were killed, including women, children and the elderly. The number of dead was at first reported as much higher than later research suggests, and is now generally put at over a hundred. News of the attack spread fear among Palestinians and contributed to their flight from their homes. Days later, Arab forces attacked a Jewish medical convoy, killing dozens in revenge.
