Tiberius died on 16 March 37 CE in Miseno, aged 77. The second Roman emperor, Tiberius succeeded his stepfather Augustus in the year 14 after a distinguished career as a general who campaigned in Germany, Pannonia and Armenia. As emperor he was an able administrator who left the treasury full and kept the frontiers secure, but he was suspicious and withdrawn. In 26 he retired to the island of Capri, leaving Rome in the hands of the praetorian prefect Sejanus, whose plots and fall led to a series of treason trials. Ancient writers such as Tacitus and Suetonius depict him as cruel, though modern historians are more balanced.
