The crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth is described in all four canonical gospels, which say that he was put to death by the Romans in Jerusalem during the governorship of Pontius Pilate, after being accused by the Jewish authorities. It is also mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus and the Jewish writer Josephus, and most historians regard it as a well-established event. The exact year is uncertain, with 30 and 33 CE the most commonly proposed, and the details differ among the gospel accounts. For Christians, the crucifixion is the central event of their faith, understood as a sacrifice for human sin and followed by the resurrection, and it is commemorated on Good Friday.
