Titus was born on 30 December 39 CE in Rome. The tenth Roman emperor, Titus was the elder son of Vespasian and a successful general who captured Jerusalem in the year 70 and destroyed the Temple during the Jewish War. His relationship with the Jewish queen Berenice caused scandal in Rome. As emperor, he completed the Colosseum, which was opened with spectacular games, and his short reign was marked by the eruption of Vesuvius, which buried Pompeii and Herculaneum, a great fire in Rome and a plague. He earned a reputation for generosity and was called the delight of the human race. He died of fever after two years, and was succeeded by Domitian.
