Jesus Christ died around 33 CE in Calvary. A Jewish teacher from Galilee who lived in the early first century, Jesus is the central figure of Christianity, in which he is regarded as the Son of God and the Messiah. Most historians accept that he was baptised by John the Baptist, taught and gathered followers in Galilee and Judaea, and was crucified in Jerusalem under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. His life and teaching are described chiefly in the four Gospels of the New Testament, which Christians believe also record his resurrection. The movement that followed him grew into one of the world's major religions, and he is also revered as a prophet in Islam.
