Jorge Luis Borges died on 14 June 1986 in Geneva, aged 86. An Argentine writer, essayist, poet and translator, Borges is among the most influential authors of the twentieth century. He is best known for short stories collected in Ficciones and The Aleph, which explore labyrinths, mirrors, infinity, libraries and the nature of time and reality, often in a form that mixes fiction with essay. He spent several years in Europe as a youth and later directed the National Library of Argentina, even as he went blind. Although he was widely expected to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, he never did. His work influenced writers around the world.
