The Cuban War of Independence was the last of Cuba's uprisings against Spanish colonial rule. It was launched by revolutionaries organised by the poet and writer Jose Marti, who died in the early fighting, and led militarily by veterans such as Maximo Gomez and Antonio Maceo. The Spanish general Valeriano Weyler tried to crush the rebels by forcing civilians into fortified towns, a policy that caused terrible suffering and shocked American opinion. After the battleship USS Maine exploded in Havana harbour in 1898, the United States intervened, and the conflict became the Spanish-American War. Spain lost Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines in the Treaty of Paris, and Cuba became formally independent in 1902 under American influence.
