The London School of Economics and Political Science was founded by members of the Fabian Society, including Sidney and Beatrice Webb, Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw, using a bequest from the lawyer Henry Hunter. Its aim was the betterment of society through the study of economic and social problems, and it began teaching in rented rooms near the Strand. It became part of the University of London a few years later and gradually grew around Houghton Street and Aldwych. Its staff and alumni have included economists such as Friedrich Hayek, the philosopher Karl Popper, the anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski, numerous Nobel laureates and many heads of state and government around the world.
