Creation of Windows NT 4.0

31 July 1996

Windows NT 4.0 was a version of Microsoft's Windows NT operating system, a 32-bit system with pre-emptive multitasking and protected memory, that was aimed at businesses. It combined the robust NT kernel with the Windows 95 user interface, with its taskbar and Start menu, and it came in Workstation and Server editions, along with others for larger enterprise needs. It was widely used in offices and on servers, and it included tools such as Internet Information Services for web hosting. Its successor, Windows 2000, built on the same technology, and support for Windows NT 4.0 ended in the 2000s. Many of its design features lived on in later versions of Windows.
