Creation of Prolog

1972

Prolog is a programming language based on formal logic, in which a program consists of facts and rules and the computer answers queries by searching for solutions through logical inference. It was created in Marseille, France, by Alain Colmerauer and Philippe Roussel, building on ideas about logic programming developed by Robert Kowalski. It was originally intended for natural-language processing. Prolog became a major language in artificial intelligence research, used for expert systems, theorem proving and language analysis. In the 1980s it was chosen as the basis of Japan's Fifth Generation Computer Systems project. It is still used for problems that involve symbolic reasoning and knowledge representation.
