Creation of C

1972

C is a general-purpose programming language created by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs, evolving from the earlier language B written by Ken Thompson. It was designed to write the Unix operating system, which was rewritten in C in 1973, making Unix easier to move between different computers. The language offers direct access to memory and efficient machine code while remaining relatively simple. The book The C Programming Language, by Brian Kernighan and Ritchie, published in 1978, became its informal standard, followed by an official ANSI standard in 1989. C is still widely used for operating systems and embedded devices, and it influenced C++, Java, JavaScript and many other languages.
