Creation of Mathematica

23 June 1988

Mathematica is a technical computing system created by Stephen Wolfram and sold by his company, Wolfram Research. It combines symbolic algebra, numerical calculation, graphics and a programming language, and was one of the first widely used programs to allow computers to manipulate formulas the way a mathematician would. It organises work in interactive notebooks that mix text, code and output. It has been used in science, engineering, education and finance, and it later became the core of the Wolfram Language and of the Wolfram Alpha answer engine. Its release helped to bring computer algebra from specialist research into everyday use.
