First Nagorno-Karabakh War

from 20 February 1988 to 16 May 1994

The First Nagorno-Karabakh War was fought between Armenians and Azerbaijanis over Nagorno-Karabakh, a mainly Armenian-populated region inside Soviet Azerbaijan. It began when the region's local council voted to join Armenia, and violence grew as the Soviet Union weakened and then collapsed. Armenian forces, supported by Armenia, took control of the region and of surrounding Azerbaijani districts, while hundreds of thousands of people on both sides fled or were expelled from their homes. A Russian-brokered ceasefire in 1994 halted the war, leaving an unrecognised, Armenian-controlled republic and an unresolved dispute that erupted into renewed fighting in 2020.
