Creation of Firefox OS

from 21 February 2013 to 1 January 2016

Firefox OS was a mobile operating system developed by Mozilla, the makers of the Firefox browser, based on Linux and the Gecko web engine. Its apps were written in web technologies such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript rather than in a native programming language, and the idea was to offer an open alternative to Android and iOS. It was aimed particularly at cheap smartphones in emerging markets, and phones running it were sold in countries including Spain, Brazil and Poland by manufacturers such as ZTE and Alcatel. Sales were disappointing, and Mozilla stopped developing it for smartphones in 2016. Its code lived on in KaiOS, an operating system for basic feature phones.
