2013 conclave

March 2013

The 2013 papal conclave was the meeting of cardinals in the Sistine Chapel to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, who had stunned the world by announcing his resignation, the first by a pope in nearly six hundred years. One hundred and fifteen cardinals under the age of eighty took part in the secret voting. Smoke from the chimney of the chapel signalled the results, black for no decision and white for a successful election. After five ballots, the cardinals chose Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, who took the name Francis. He was the first pope from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere in modern times and the first Jesuit to hold the office.
