Release of TikTok

September 2016

TikTok traces its origin to September 2016, when the Chinese technology company ByteDance launched a short-video app called Douyin in China. A version for markets outside China, named TikTok, followed in 2017. In 2018 ByteDance merged it with Musical.ly, a lip-sync app popular with teenagers, which brought a large audience in the United States and Europe. Its main feature is an algorithm-driven feed that recommends short, looping vertical videos, and it became one of the most downloaded apps in the world within a few years. It has also been the subject of political debate over data privacy and the influence of its Chinese parent company, with several governments restricting its use on official devices.
