Construction of Westfalenstadion

2 April 1974

The Westfalenstadion is a football stadium in Dortmund, Germany, and the home of Borussia Dortmund. It was built for the 1974 World Cup, where it hosted several matches, and it stood next to the old Rote Erde ground. The stadium has been expanded several times and since 2005 has been called Signal Iduna Park for sponsorship reasons, though many fans still use the old name. Its South Stand, known as the Yellow Wall, is one of the biggest standing terraces in European football. With room for over eighty thousand spectators, it has the largest capacity in Germany and was a venue for the 2006 World Cup.
