The Vatican Museums are the museums of the Holy See in Vatican City, displaying one of the world's great collections of art and antiquities assembled by the popes over centuries. Their origin is traditionally linked to Pope Julius II, who in the early 16th century placed the ancient statue of Laocoon in the Vatican. A dedicated museum, the Museo Pio-Clementino, was established under Popes Clement XIV and Pius VI in the late 18th century. The complex includes the Raphael Rooms, the Gallery of Maps and the Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceiling and the Last Judgement. The museums receive millions of visitors every year.
