Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born on 27 August 1770 in Stuttgart. A German philosopher, Hegel was one of the main figures of German idealism and developed a comprehensive system covering logic, nature, history, art, religion and politics. His Phenomenology of Spirit, published in 1807, traces the development of consciousness toward absolute knowledge, and his Science of Logic and Elements of the Philosophy of Right set out his metaphysics and political thought. He saw history as a rational process in which freedom gradually becomes realized, and his dialectical method influenced later thinkers. After teaching at Jena and Heidelberg he became a professor in Berlin. His work shaped Marx, Kierkegaard and many schools of philosophy that followed.
