The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam holds the largest collection of the works of Vincent van Gogh in the world. It was founded to house the collection of the artist's family, including paintings, drawings and letters which had belonged to his brother Theo and then passed to Theo's son, Vincent Willem van Gogh. The Dutch state and the family agreed on the transfer, and the museum opened on the Museumplein in 1973. The building was designed by the architect Gerrit Rietveld and completed after his death. Besides works by Van Gogh, the museum also shows works by his contemporaries and teachers, such as Gauguin and Monet.
