The Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics was formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by joining two older institutions, the Harvard College Observatory, dating from 1839, and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, which had moved to Cambridge in 1955. The combined centre is one of the largest astronomy research institutions in the world. It operates or takes part in telescopes and instruments on the ground and in space, including the Chandra X-ray Observatory's science operations, the Submillimeter Array in Hawaii and the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration. Its researchers work on subjects from planets and stars to galaxies and cosmology.
