In response to Sputnik, the US Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act in July 1958, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration began operations on 1 October 1958. It absorbed the earlier research agency NACA, together with several military rocket programmes. Its first projects were Mercury, to put an American in orbit, and robotic probes to the Moon. Over the following decade NASA grew to employ some 400,000 people, and in 1969 it landed the first humans on the Moon.
