Construction of One World Trade Center

3 November 2014

One World Trade Center is the main building of the new World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, rising on the site of the Twin Towers destroyed in the attacks of 11 September 2001. Designed by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, it follows the overall plan by Daniel Libeskind, and its height of 1,776 feet refers to the year of the Declaration of Independence. Work began in 2006, and the tower opened to its first tenants in late 2014. It is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and stands beside the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. It was originally known as the Freedom Tower.
