Creation of Android Lollipop

3 November 2014

Android Lollipop, version 5.0 of the Android operating system, was released by Google with the Nexus 6 phone and Nexus 9 tablet. It introduced Material Design, a new visual language with layered surfaces, bold colours and animations, which gave Android a more consistent look across devices. Under the surface, it replaced the Dalvik runtime with the Android Runtime, ART, which compiles apps ahead of time and improved performance. It also added a redesigned notification system, a battery saver mode, support for 64-bit processors and better security features such as default encryption on new devices. Lollipop was one of the biggest updates in Android's history, though the rollout across manufacturers was slow.
