Lenin's Mausoleum is the tomb on Red Square in Moscow in which the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin is displayed. After Lenin died in January 1924, a temporary wooden mausoleum was built within days, followed by a larger wooden version. The present stepped structure, made of granite, marble and porphyry, was designed by the architect Alexey Shchusev and completed in 1930. It also served as a reviewing stand for Soviet leaders during parades, and for some years the body of Stalin lay beside Lenin's. Since the end of the Soviet Union, there has been repeated debate in Russia about whether Lenin should be buried.
