Khotyn Fortress is a large medieval fortress on the right bank of the Dniester river, in the Chernivtsi region of western Ukraine. A wooden fortification stood on the site earlier, and in the fourteenth century a stone fortress was built there, which was later strengthened by the princes of Moldavia, and then by the Ottomans, who held it for long periods. Its position on the border of several powers made it the scene of major battles, such as the Battle of Khotyn in 1621, in which the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Cossacks stopped an Ottoman army. The fortress was changed many times over the centuries and was used in films. Today it is one of the best-known castles in Ukraine, and a museum.
