Kingdom of Sardinia

from 1324 to 1861

The Kingdom of Sardinia was created when the Crown of Aragon took control of the island of Sardinia, and it later passed to the Spanish Crown and then, in the early eighteenth century, to the House of Savoy. The Savoy dynasty ruled it together with their mainland possessions in Piedmont and Savoy, and the state, from its capital in Turin, became a significant power in northern Italy. In the nineteenth century, under Victor Emmanuel II and his minister Count Cavour, the kingdom led the movement for Italian unification. It annexed Lombardy, central Italy and, with Garibaldi's help, the south, and in 1861 the king was proclaimed King of Italy.
