Construction of Josep Tarradellas Airport Barcelona-El Prat

1916

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport is the main airport of Barcelona and the second busiest in Spain, in the delta of the Llobregat River south-west of the city. Flying began on the site in the early twentieth century, and an airfield was established there, which was later developed for commercial services. The airport was greatly expanded in the 2000s, with a large new terminal and a third runway, and it is a base for the airline Vueling. In 2012 it was renamed in honour of Josep Tarradellas, the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia who returned from exile after Franco's death. It serves millions of passengers, both tourists and business travellers.
