Construction of John F. Kennedy International Airport

1947

John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, is one of the busiest international gateways in the United States. It was built on marshland beside Jamaica Bay as New York International Airport, popularly called Idlewild after the golf course it replaced, and opened in the late 1940s. Following the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, it was renamed in his honour. Notable buildings have included the TWA Flight Center designed by Eero Saarinen. The airport has several terminals serving airlines from around the world and plays a central role in transatlantic travel.
