Construction of Helsinki Airport

1952

Helsinki Airport, also known as Helsinki-Vantaa, is the main international airport of Finland, located in the city of Vantaa, some nineteen kilometres north of central Helsinki. It was opened in 1952, in time for the Summer Olympic Games held in Helsinki that year, and replaced the old airfield at Malmi. It is the home base of the national airline Finnair, which uses the airport as a hub for traffic between Europe and Asia, taking advantage of the shorter flight routes over the northern part of the globe. The airport has had several terminal extensions and is by far the largest in Finland.
